Audi has concluded the production of its legendary sports car, the R8, with the final unit rolling off the assembly line in Heilbronn. The epitome of perfection came in the form of a bright yellow car in the Performance Quattro Edition, featuring carbon fiber accents and 20-inch wheels.

Audi initially planned to end R8 production by the end of 2023. However, an unexpected surge in demand for this model led to the decision to extend production.

Sales of the Audi R8 increased by 49% over the past year, reaching 1591 units. Despite this surge, the sports car still lagged behind other models in the brand’s lineup in terms of sales due to its high cost. The sales record for the R8 was set in 2008 when 5016 units were sold.

The discontinuation of the R8 means that only one supercar with a V10 engine will remain on the market — the Lamborghini Huracan from the Volkswagen Group. However, it too is slated for discontinuation by the end of this year. While there won’t be a direct successor to the R8, a hybrid model with a V8 engine is planned for the Huracan.

Audi has announced a development strategy wherein the brand transitions to electric vehicles. Starting in 2026, all new Audi models will exclusively feature electric powertrains. By 2029, each of the brand’s factories will produce at least one fully electric model. According to the plan, by 2033, Audi will completely phase out the production of internal combustion engine vehicles, freeing up capacity for electric cars.
